Our image of the month shows the late Professor Owen Lyndon Wade at our Wellcome Witness Seminar on 'Clinical Pharmacology in the UK, c. 1950–2000: Industry and regulation'. Professor Wade is probably best known for his work on the British National Formulary (BNF) widely regarded as the 'bible' by GPs and those who prescribe and dispense medicines in the UK.Professor Wade joined the Medical Research Council’s pneumoconiosis research unit in 1948. After a period working in the USA, he was appointed to the chair of pharmacology and therapeutics at Queen’s University, Belfast (1957– 71) and to the chair in clinical pharmacology at Birmingham University (1971–86). He was a member of the Joint Formulary Committee responsible for the British National Formulary (1963–86) and chairman of the Joint Formulary Committee (1978–86). He was chairman of the Subcommittee on Adverse Reactions of the Committee on Safety of Drugs. He was also a founder member of the World Health Organization Drug Utilization Research Group.
